Stanford University History.

It all began in 1876 when former California Governor Leland Stanford bought 650 acres of Rancho San Francisquito. Stanford, who was a lawyer, built his country home and made plans for his stock farm. Eventually, he ended up purchasing land that totaled more than 8,000 acres. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who was responsible for Central Park in New York City, Stanford University was to be coeducational and non-denominational, both highly unusual for the time. Visitors to Stanford University will have a wealth of wonderful sights to see and interesting attractions to explore. The Cantor Arts Center features many bronze sculptures of Rodin. More sculptures from the famous French artist can be found next door at the Rodin Sculpture Garden. The Hoover Tower, which is part of Hoover Institution, offers incredible views of the Stanford campus along with the Bay Area from its 285-foot-high observation deck.
